This position paper outlines the requirements and recommendations as identified by ANEC with respect to the desirability and feasibility of standards on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Both at national and international level, initiatives exist related to CSR and standardisation. In some countries, the national standards body embarked on elaborating a national CSR standard, whilst the Consumer Policy Committee of ISO (ISO COPOLCO) recommended to ISO Council to explore the feasibility and
desirability of a Management System Standard (MSS) in line with ISO 9000/ISO 14001 on CSR. In addition, at European level, a Multi-stakeholder Forum was set up to improve knowledge about the relationship between CSR and sustainable development.

Het het 1000-ste ISO 14001-certificaat in Nederland werd onlangs uitgereikt aan het bedrijf Gispen International uit Culemborg, een fabrikant van kantoormeubilair.
Het SCCM (de Stichting Coördinatie Certificatie Milieuzorgsystemen), een samenwerkingsverband van bedrijfsleven, overheid en milieubeweging, maakte tevens de uitkomst bekend van een Intomart-onderzoek onder directeuren en milieumanagers van de duizend Nederlandse bedrijven die vrijwillig hun milieuzorgsysteem volgens de ISO-norm hebben laten certificeren. Zo’n certificering is voor de meeste ondernemingen een kostbare en tijdrovende activiteit. Toch blijkt maar liefst 93% van de bedrijven tevreden over hun vrijwillige besluit.

Meer dan de helft van de Nederlandse bedrijven met een officieel milieucertificaat volgens de ISO 14001-norm, blijkt aan de milieuzorg te verdienen. Na aftrek van alle extra milieu-inspanningen in tijd en geld zegt 53 procent van de bedrijven dat hun milieuzorg elk jaar opnieuw extra winst oplevert. Below please find the resolution of the Consumer Policy Committee (COPOLCO)
of ISO concerning ISO CSR standards, which was made at the June, 2002
meeting of COPOLCO. The report, The Desirability and Feasibility of ISO CSR
standards” (to obtain a copy, see previous Forum posting) formed the basis
for this resolution. ISO Council will meet in September to consider the
resolutions of COPOLCO and other ISO committees on a wide range of topics.

available for comments. The draft report was prepared by the “Consumer
Protection in the Global Market” Working Group of COPOLCO, the Consumer
Policy Committee of ISO (the International Organization for
Standardization).

The CSR and Standards Forum was created in August, 2001, following the May, 2001 meeting of ISO COPOLCO (Consumer Policy Committee) in Oslo, Norway.
The purpose of the Forum is to facilitate worldwide discussion of the
possible role of standards (i.e., standards developed through the formal
standards system, at the national and international level) to articulate and promote the concept of corporate social responsibility. The Forum is designed to provide a mechanism for increasing awareness and promoting constructive discussion of new and existing corporate social responsibility initiatives (be they developed through the standards systems or not), and their relevance to existing or potential standards projects. It is recognized that widespread private sector adherence to corporate social responsibility criteria is likely to be the result of a combination of approaches, including inter-governmental agreements, domestic legislative and regulatory techniques, standards developed through the formal standards system, voluntary codes, and education/information approaches.

De Provincie Limburg heeft vorige week de ‘BIM’-prijs gewonnen voor een project dat BedrijfsInterne Milieuzorg koppelt aan vergunningverlening. De Limburgse milieugedeputeerde Margot Hofman-Ruijters heeft deze prijs in ontvangst genomen tijdens de 8e Nationale Milieuzorgdag in Ede.
Het prijswinnende project heet ‘Samen op weg naar ISO 14001 / Vergunnning op Maat’. De jaarlijkse prijs is een initiatief van Milieu Magazine, vakblad voor milieumanagement.
De Provincie Limburg heeft dit project uitgevoerd met tien industriële
bedrijven uit verschillende branches en met diverse overheden (gemeenten en
water-schappen). Het project wordt in opdracht van de Provincie Limburg
begeleid door BMA Advies.
