Companies that are socially irresponsible are being punished

Consumers and shareholders are increasingly inclined to “punish” companies that are socially irresponsible, a new survey showed. According to the third Annual CSR Monitor by Environics International, the proportion of consumers who report punishing companies because of poor social performance has increased from last year’s survey, from 20 percent to 29 percent. Implementatie ervan kan schadelijke gevolgen hebben voor arme landen én bedrijven, zegt David Henderson Maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen geeft bedrijven een nieuwe missie. Ze moeten een soort ‘bedrijfsburgerschap’ aanvaarden en hun zaken, in samenspraak met een uitgebreid scala aan ‘belanghebbenden’, regelen op een manier die het doel van ‘duurzame ontwikkeling’ bevordert. Naar verluidt heeft dit doel drie dimensies: een economische, een sociale en een milieudimensie. Daarom moeten bedrijven op al die drie gebieden hun doelstellingen formuleren, hun prestaties meten en onafhankelijk laten beoordelen. Zij moeten een ‘drievoudig winstoogmerk’ nastreven en zich niet louter richten op het verwezenlijken van economische winst en het vergroten van de aandeelhouderswaarde. Following on from a similar study conducted in 2000, international reputation analysis firm Echo Research has examined how CSR has progressed as an influence on corporate behaviour and how the challenges it faces will change in the future. In a “Corporate Responsibility Rating”, the Munich-based rating agency oekom research has assessed the world’s top 16 manufacturers of office equipment and domestic appliances according to 200 environmental and social criteria. The study showed two Japanese companies leading the field: on a scale from A+ to D-, Ricoh and Toshiba achieved scores of B+ and B respectively.
