Key social performance indicators for financial institutions are set out in recommendations published today.
Working within a project called SPI-Finance 2002, international banks, insurance companies, and other stakeholders have identified indicators for use in public reporting that are unique to explaining the social performance of financial institutions. The indicators supplement a broader set of sustainability indicators set out in guidelines developed by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

De Nederlandse chemische industrie presteert steeds beter op het gebied van schoon, veilig en energiezuinig produceren. Dat is de conclusie van het Responsible Care-rapport 2001 dat Staatssecretaris van VROM, de heer P. van Geel op 18 november in ontvangst neemt. De vereniging van de Nederlandse Chemische Industrie (VNCI) publiceert jaarlijks het Responsible Care-rapport. In dit rapport legt de bedrijfstak verantwoording af over de prestaties op het gebied van milieu, veiligheid en gezondheid.
In 2000 sloot de chemische industrie de eerste fase, van het in 1993 met de overheid afgesloten, Milieuconvenant succesvol af. In 2001 richtte de chemische industrie zich op de tweede fase van dit convenant en de hiervoor gestelde richtinggevende doelstellingen voor 2010.

-The implementation of CSR practices has to remain voluntary, because translating the concept of CSR into a compulsory framework would constitute an additional administrative burden for SMEs” Hans Werner Mueller, UEAPME’s Secretary General, said at today’s opening session of the European Multistakeholder Forum on CSR.
UEAPME also criticises the current interpretation of CSR in the European discussion. The concept overlooks a major part of SMEs community involvement as it only takes the enterprises’ visible activities into account. However, a majority of SMEs have taken up their social responsibilities in less visible areas – notably in the field of professional training – a long time ago. According to the SME Observatory, more than 50% of SMEs are already committed in different ways to community oriented activities. Therefore, introducing compulsory measures would be counterproductive, as it would only make SMEs administrative tasks more difficult and ultimately increase market entry costs.

Key social and environmental performance indicators for tour operators are being launched here today during the Environmental Awareness Day at the World Travel Market.
The new report by the Tour Operators Initiative (TOI), a global network of tour operators supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in liaison with UNESCO and the World Tourism Organsiation, will help to promote environment friendly and socially responsible tourism. The indicators, in the form of recommendations, represent one of the first -sectoral supplements” to the already established Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines (see below).

Voormalig staatssecretaris Gerrit Ybema van Economische Zaken heeft, ter ondersteuning van het bedrijfsleven bij het vormgeven van maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen (MVO), besloten om een tweejarig onderzoeksprogramma MVO te ondersteunen. De nieuwe staatssecretaris Joop Wijn onderschrijft deze beslissing.
Het onderzoeksprogramma MVO is ontstaan uit een samenwerkingsverband van zeven universiteiten (EUR, KUB, KUN, Nijenrode, UT, UvA, VU), het NIDO (Nationaal Initiatief Duurzame Ontwikkeling) en het ministerie van Economische Zaken. Daarnaast worden de mogelijkheden voor samenwerking met onderzoeksinstellingen in Europa, die met soortgelijk onderzoek bezig zijn, en kenniscentra zoals het Global Reporting Initiative (dat recent zijn hoofdkantoor in Amsterdam heeft gevestigd), onderzocht. Het Kenniscentrum MVO dat momenteel in oprichting is, zal te zijner tijd een centrale rol gaan vervullen bij het verspreiden van de opgedane kennis naar het bedrijfsleven.
