On 27 March 2003, the European Commission announced the three Special Awards for excellence in the fields of Diversity, Gender Equality and Lifelong Learning and the 2003 list of 100 Best Workplaces in the European Union. The awards were presented by Anna Diamantopoulou, European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs at a Conference and Awards Ceremony in Brussels. The workplaces are honoured for the quality of their workplace environments, as determined by a survey process analysing both corporate policies and employee judgements on their own organisations.

Royal Philips Electronics launched the company’s first annual Sustainability Report, adding detailed accountability for economic and social responsibility to its former Environmental Report. The reporting initiative is in line with the steps taken in recent years to increase transparency and accountability, adhering to the company’s business principles. Philips also announced that the company has established a Sustainability Board, Corporate Sustainability Office, corporate Sustainability Policy and a global sustainability sponsorship initiative.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an organization with a mission of developing a generally accepted, organization-level sustainability reporting framework through a multi-stakeholder, global consultative process that has involved corporations, NGOs, governments, accountancies, consultancies, labor organizations, investors, and others.
GRI is now inviting comments from companies and other stakeholders on the working draft of a Telecommunications Sectoral Supplement to the GRI Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. In August 2002, the GRI and the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) convened a task force to draft a supplement to the 2002 GRI Guidelines. The objective of this supplement is to identify additional telecom-specific economic, environmental, and social issues not directly captured in the Guidelines, and is being designed with both service providers and equipment manufacturers in the telecom sector in mind.

The Norwegian insurance company Storebrand has come out top in a sustainability assessment of the insurance sector carried out by Munich-based rating agency oekom research. Storebrand beat 69 competitors for the top place in oekom’s Corporate Responsibility Rating, a sustainability rating based on 200 environmental and social criteria. The Norwegian company scored a “B” on a scale of A+ to D-. Another 15 insurance companies were assessed as having sustainability performance well above average in an international comparison by oekom research. Over 15 sustainably managed funds with a total volume of more than 750 million Euros are using oekom’s ratings in making investment decisions.
