But the survey by GlobeScan Inc. (formerly Environics International) found that only half of people surveyed in March think that Canadian companies are doing as much to be socially and environmentally responsible as companies in the United States and Europe.

Ninety-one per cent said their drive to work for an employer would be strongly affected by their feeling that the company is being responsible in such areas as sustainability, environmental awareness, human rights, governance, community activities and how they treat their employees.

The results suggest that “companies should be doing more to make the point that they are doing things that are responsible,” said Lynn Anderson, vice-president marketing for Hewlett-Packard Canada Co. in Toronto, which co-sponsored the survey.

The survey of 1,506 employees in a broad spectrum of industries across Canada was conducted in March.
