For the sixth consecutive year SBM Offshore is delighted to announce that the Company has been selected to be part of the respected Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) for 2015/2016. To be recognised in the ‘World’ category – an index listing of 317 companies – is in particular satisfying with SBM Offshore one of six companies from the Energy Equipment and Services sector, out of 42 eligible members.

The DJSI follows a best-in-class approach, including companies across all industries that outperform their peers in numerous sustainability metrics. SBM’s score for 2015 stands at 73 on a scale of 100, compared to the industry average of 44 and the industry leader at 78. Versus last year, the Company shows an increase of 10%, with the rise recorded evenly over the categories of the index.

The Company received Industry Best scores on Corporate Governance, Environmental Policy/Management system and Environmental Reporting, reflecting continuous focus on improving transparency.

SBM Offshore Chief Governance and Compliance Officer Erik Lagendijk says “The continued hard work over the last year to implement our sustainability strategy and framework combined with improved transparency and compliance with GRI G4 core reporting standard is reflected in our improved score. Inclusion of SBM Offshore in the DJSI is an important acknowledgement of the Group’s high standards and in particular achievements to date to further our governance and compliance goals, which are embraced by every employee. Our commitment continues to embed sustainable development in our business and culture for the long term. To be selected is a testimony to all our employees’ efforts across each DJSI category and we can be justly proud.”

The DJSI requires companies to strive for a balance when approaching sustainability in their operations. The assessment considers issues like greenhouse gas emissions, flaring, production of waste, occupational health & safety and supply chain management. Also appraised are ethics & integrity, human rights and local development elements. All of which are particularly pertinent to our Company’s business in emerging economies like Angola and Brazil.

SBM Offshore integrates sustainability in all its activities, including Technology and Operations and continues to improve its sustainability performance across the full lifecycle in our sector.

Some of this past year’s sustainable activities in include:

  • Fostering local development including the development of an IT and English training programme for the SBM Offshore sponsored orphanage in Angola
  • Creation of an integrated cost-effective supply chain combining SBM Offshore’s commercial edge with its sustainability edge
  • The Company set a target of 10% reduction on gas emissions related to flaring during operations offshore on SBM Offshore’s account. In the first half of 2015 a fleet wide reduction of 25% was recorded
  • The second annual ‘Life Day’ took place when over 15,000 employees and contractors in 40 SBM worldwide locations stood down to concentrate on safety, health and environmental issues
  • Participation in the creation of a welding school at BRASA shipyard in Brazil
  • Managing environmental impact including the initiative for a blue charter for companies operating on and NGOs concerned with Guanabara Bay in Rio, Brazil
