VAROPreem
Sustainability Assurance Lead | Managing the Biofuel Supply Chain
Biofuel trading is only as strong as its documentation. At VAROPreem’s Rotterdam office, sustainability isn’t a marketing department it’s a core operational function. As the production and trading of low-carbon fuels expand across North-West Europe, the complexity of mass balancing and regulatory compliance grows with it. On behalf of VAROPreem, SourceMonks is looking for a Sustainability Assurance Lead to manage the team that keeps this chain intact.
The Core Challenge: Compliance in Motion
In the renewable energy sector, “Sustainability Assurance” means navigating the technical intersection of ISCC-EU standards and RED III legislation. It’s about ensuring that every cubic meter of biofuel traded across the Benelux, France, and Spain is fully traceable and audit-ready. For this role, we need someone who understands that operational accuracy is the baseline for trading success. You will act as the technical lead for a team of analysts, making sure the data matches the physical reality of the fuel.
Your Day-to-Day: Leadership and Technical Oversight
This isn’t a hands-off management role. You will be the go-to expert for your team when a mass balance doesn’t add up or when a new regulatory requirement from Brussels needs to be implemented. You will spend your time bridging the gap between the bio-trading desks and the national authorities.
What you will be doing:
- Overseeing the daily flow of sustainability documentation. You ensure that mass balances under ISCC and RED III are accurate and that regulatory submissions to national bodies are submitted on time.
- Leading and coaching a team of Sustainability Analysts. You’ll handle the daily workload distribution, knowledge sharing, and the professional development of the group.
- Acting as the interface between your team and other functions like Finance, Legal, and Bio-trading. You’ll provide scenario planning for biofuel positions and handle RED/ETS2-related submissions.
- Maintaining internal controls so the organization is always prepared for external audits and identifying where the central sustainability systems can be improved.
The Team Environment
The Rotterdam office is international and focused on the practical side of the energy transition. The team is relatively young and works closely with the trading floor. It’s an environment where technical knowledge is respected and where the ability to solve a complex compliance problem is more valuable than corporate jargon.
