LC Packaging International is joining forces to accelerate the transition in the global shipping sector towards more sustainability. This month, LC Packaging International has officially joined the BICEPS Network: a demand-driven global network that drives sustainable change in the shipping sector through the collaboration of shippers. BICEPS stands for “Boosting Initiatives for Collaborative Emission-reduction with the Power of Shippers”.

By establishing a global network with sufficient volume in the market it can exert influence and drive change. Moreover, through an active dialogue between supply and demand of shippers with carriers, chain partners and solutions providers, BICEPS Network aims to accelerate and scale up market innovations and sustainable initiatives by the power of demand. Specifically, the network aims to create impact on:

  • Reduction of emissions of CO2, sulphur and black carbon,
  • Decarbonization of shipping by clean fuels, port call optimization, energy-efficiency solutions, wind propulsion, etc.
  • Impact on biodiversity of a.o. ballast water,
  • End-of-life cycle programs for vessels.

Joining forces with peers

Next to LC Packaging, the collaboration of shippers includes shippers such as FrieslandCampina, Lamb Weston / Meijer, DSM, Almatis, Elkem, Farm Frites, Corbion and VION Food Group.

Walter Vermeer, Chairman of BICEPS Network: “We are delighted to welcome the global cargo-owner LC Packaging to join the BICEPS Network in our journey towards sustainable shipping. This is a clear mark of the further international expansion of global shippers leveraging forces for a better world”.

Abhishek Kumar, Supply Chain Manager at LC Packaging: “LC Packaging has set itself the goal to reduce its GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 in its value chain. This includes an emission reduction related to transportation, in particular sea freight. By joining the BICEPS Network, we can learn and join peers in lobbying towards more sustainable shipments, understand more on the sustainable developments in the shipping sector and make use of the BICEPS rating system to make more sustainable shipping choices.”

Boosting sustainable innovation in the shipping industry

To really make an impact, companies must join forces. Together, the shippers affiliated with the BICEPS Network represent an even more significant amount of shipping demand to give a boost to change in the right direction of decarbonisation of shipping. They use the power of demand via their global procurement processes to stimulate and reward ocean carriers to take action in the implementation of sustainability solutions. The BICEPS Network accelerates the dialogue between relevant actors in the chain to boost adoption of market-ready sustainable innovations in the shipping sector; acting together in dialogue with the shipping sector on how to create sustainable improvements and boost innovations. All shippers will use the BICEPS Rating System in their procurement processes of their global ocean freight transports and use the actual sustainability performance of carriers as a factor in their allocation.
