Guidance for measuring and improving business performance and stakeholder relations SMEs

The United Nations Environment ProgrammeÃ??s Division of Technology, Industry and Environment and the Eco-Efficiency and Sustainable Enterprise Group at the Wuppertal Institute in Germany have jointly developed the Efficient Entrepreneur Calendar for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In combination with an additional booklet, the Calendar provides assistance and guidance on how to measure and improve business performance and stakeholder relations in seven areas. On the basis of "You canÃ??t manage what you canÃ??t measure", it introduces performance measures that are easy to assess and evaluate. The Calendar charts a "month-by-month" programme that ends with a simple Efficient Entrepreneur report which can be put in a global internet database.

A Calendar for SMEs …

The Calendar will be useful to any firm that considers itself to be an SME-type
company or indeed to any company that requires an introduction to performance
measurement and communication. It helps companies find out how much energy, water and raw materials they consume, how much pollution (such as waste, air and water emissions and noise) they produce, and where costs can be reduced and customer satisfaction improved.

… and for larger companies

SMEs are often suppliers or customers to large companies. If economic,
environmental and social improvements are to be made all along the product
chain, networking is critically important. Large companies can donate the calendar to SMEs in their supply chain and as a return SMEs will be enabled to share information in an organized and efficient manner, and report on their performance in a standardized way.

The Efficient Entrepreneur for 2001 is available in English, French and Spanish.
