Wageningen University & Research (WUR)

Do you have experience conducting research on sustainability in agri-food chains and knowledge of dairy farming? Do you want to contribute to complex transitions and innovations in dairy supply chains through independent research? Then this job is for you!

As a Researcher in Sustainable Dairy Farming, you will work on applied research in dynamic, interdisciplinary project teams. Together with your team, you will address questions related to the sustainability of dairy farming, as part of the dairy supply chain. For example, you will calculate the impact of various measures on greenhouse gas emissions from dairy farms. You will compare the cost-effectiveness of these measures and assess their expected effects on other sustainability themes, such as biodiversity and animal welfare. In another project, you might evaluate the sustainability and economic performance of new business models.

This role focuses on projects with industry partners (such as sector organizations, suppliers, and dairy processors) at both national and international levels. You will present research results to clients and publish your findings in (applied) scientific journals. Additionally, you will contribute to acquisition processes and project proposals. This role offers excellent opportunities for career growth into a project leadership position.

Examples of our work on sustainable dairy supply chains can be found here:

  • Sustainable Dairy Chain (the follow-up of which started in early 2025)

The Team

You will be part of the Transition, Risk, and Innovation Governance expertise group, one of 12 expertise groups within Wageningen Social & Economic Research. The group consists of around 30 enthusiastic researchers committed to creating a more sustainable world. They apply their in-depth knowledge of agricultural sectors and supply chains, transition management, entrepreneurship, and behavioral change. Within project teams, we often collaborate with other departments of Wageningen University & Research and external knowledge partners.
